The Deliverance (Wu Zhe) of all the Sentient Beings Regardless of Land and Water Dharma Ritual –Purification of Ritual Platform, Mind, and Action – organized by Nanputou in Ding-you Year of Lunar Calendar

The Nanputuo Temple organized the Deliverance (Wu Zhe) of  all the Sentient Beings Regardless of Land and Water Ritual.(Water and Land Dharma Service)  The term “Wu Zhe” means non-obstruction, non-restriction, non-differentiation and non-discrimination. This was organized from 15th to 21st of October in Ding You year of Lunar Calendar. The Most Ven. Ze Wu (the Abbot of the Nanputuo Temple) was invited to host the ritual and also the Old Ven. Guang Ci was invited as the Chief Counselor.

Before the commencement of the ritual, all the places inside and outside of the temple should be purified and cleaned likewise each individual action should be in guidance and restriction. On 1st of  December at 2:00 p.m., the Nanputuo Temple organized the ritual ceremony of Water Purification and Perfuming of the Platforms and invited the Most Ven. Ze Wu to host the ceremony by leading all the participants to walk around the temple, purifying the Main Platform, the Platform of Fa Hua (i.e. Lotus sūtra), the Platform of Leng Yan (i.e. Shurangama sūtra), the Platform of Zhu Jing (i.e. all Sūtras), the Platform of Jing Tu (i.e. Pure Land), the Platform of Hua Yan (i.e. Flower Ornament sūtra) and the Platform of Yan Shou (i.e. Being Longevity).

The Perfuming of the Platforms with the incense is the most important ritual ceremony before the Deliverance (Wu Zhe) of Water and Land Dharma Service. Sūtra describe that when the stove and incense are burning, the realm of Dharma pervaded the perfuming atmosphere. Due to burning of incense, the perfuming atmosphere emerged which can purify the ritual platform or ritual places of Buddhism.  By following Dharma precepts and ritual means, it creates a purified and clean ritual place while all the Buddhists could observe themselves by taking part in this ceremony. Subsequently, in later 7 days, they can participate in this great event with a purified heart.

All monastics followed the Dharma Precepts

    Those who joined in this Water and Land Dharma Service include the residents of the Nanputuo Temple and all the monks (both teachers and students) of the Buddhist College of Minnan (BCM), which are about 400 people (altogether). The students from the Division of Monks, the International Division (Postgraduate Program in Foreign Language), undergraduate program, pre-undergraduate program and the Buddhist Spiritual Nurturing School participated in each Platform and to lead the devotees for chanting the Sūtras and bowing the genuine repentance. These students have been staying in the BCM for many years and have been skillfully practicing the Buddhist ritual rules and precepts with both theoretical and practical knowledge. They behave in a solemn and grand way, which is a direct reflection of their daily behaviors because of edification and cultivation of  the Dharma studies.

The believers purified their hearts and actions

In order to ensure the Water and Land Dharma Service to be held successfully in a magnificent way and let those participants (both donators and believers) know more about the ritual rules of this event and learn about the Buddhist theories, the Most Ven. Ze Wu supervised the editing of the brochure for Buddhist practitioners, listing several tips and concerns of this event as well as common sense of Buddhism and inviting masters to lead Buddhist practitioners to study in groups. Moreover, during the event, the temple would hold Buddhist Lectures in every afternoon, which would make all the participants to understand and acquire the teachings of Buddhism while chanting and bowing genuine repentance, and promote their theoretical and practical studies in a parallel way.  

The Sympathetic of joy of a numerous meritorious Ritual without any obstruction

In order to ensure to have a solemn and magnificent ritual during the process, all the Platforms except for the Inner Platform and Main Platform were opened for the public. Those Buddhist practitioners, who want to chant could participate chant could go to do it together with other monastics. The Most Ven. Ze Wu explained: “The Water and Land Dharma Service is a Buddhist event in purpose of wide deliverance of sentient beings; therefore, any one could join this event.

The Nanputuo Temple is free to enter without paying the entry ticket and provides free incense and Sūtra; in this Water and Land Dharma Service without any obstructions and hindrances. We welcome all the believers and practitioners to participate compliantly in this event for gaining merits.” During this event, thousands and hundreds of tourists and participants everyday can experience the Dharma service no matter whether they come from far or near distance.

Besides, in order to provide convenience for those believers and net friends who cannot come to this event, the temple exclusively set up a special column with the title “Online Praying and Development on a Wholesome Rapport to accommodate  the public to join in this event for dispelling calamities and relief via internet. The Buddhist Monastics, practitioners, and devotees  who are from different countries such as  Singapore, Thailand, U.S.A, Sri Lanka and Canada, have submitted their wishes online for their nations, families, relatives and friends. These wishes would be aided and blessed by the merits of the event day and night.

In the evening, the ceremony of sūtra chanting was held. All the monastics gathered in the dining room to chant the Chapter of the Universal Door and the Sūtra of Medicine Buddha. At 6:00 p.m., a ritual procedure of Yogācāra Offering Service under Five Bodhisattvas for Flaming Mouth was held in the Mahāvīra Hall for the purpose of blessing and dispelling calamities for all the volunteers of the temple.
