China-Canada Buddhist Education Exchange Dinner together with the Unveiling Ceremony of the Alumni Association of the Buddhist College of Minnan Canada Branch was held in Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden of Canada

On 20th September the Most Ven. Ze Wu, who is the Vice President of the Buddhist Association of China, the President of the Buddhist Association of Xiamen, the Abbot of the Nanputuo Temple and the Rector of the Buddhist College of Minnan (BCM), led the Buddhist delegation of “One Belt One Road -- USA and Canada Mission” to arrive at the Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden of Canada, attending the China-Canada Buddhist Education Exchange Dinner together with the Unveiling Ceremony of the Alumni Association of the Buddhist College of Minnan Canada Branch-BCMAA sponsored by the Buddhist Association of Canada Cham Shan Temple. Two representatives of Wu Feng-yi and Majid Jowhari ( both are the Members of Parliament), Mr Dong Han-peng and Ms. Huang Su-mei (both are the Members of Provincial Parliament of Ontario), Mr. Yang Bao-hua and Mr. Song Chen-guang (both are the Consuls of the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Toronto), Mr. Lee Guo-xian, Mr. Zhao Shan-guang and Ms. Yang Qi-qing (these three are the City Councilors of Markham, Ontario), and Mr. Chen Zhi-hui (the Regional Councilor of Richmond Hill, Ontario) were invited for this event. The Most Ven. Xing Kong (the founder of Cham Shan Temple in Toronto) and The Most Ven. Da Yi (the Abbot of Cham Shan Temple and the President of the Buddhist Association of Canada) led the Saṃgha to participate in this great event successfully. The ceremony was hosted by Ven. Zheng Xing and Ms. Chen Shan-yin the devotees of the Cham Shan Temple.

The dinner of education exchange commenced with the singing of national anthems of China and Canada at 7:00. p.m. Then, all the participants watched the videos on the Introduction of the Buddhist College of Minnan, Commemoration of Ven. Miao Zhan’s Centenaries Birthday, the Memorabilia of Cham Shan Temple and the One-year Memorandum of Cham Shan Temple.

The Most Ven. Ze Wu delivered a speech, “in order to promote the fine development of Buddhist Saṃgha education, the delegation from the Buddhist College of Minnan, the Buddhist Association of Canada Cham Shan Temple as well as the prominent personages from all the social circles gathered together to celebrate the unveiling of BCMAA Canada Branch. After this establishment, we hope talented people from different cultures will gather in this platform to elaborate and practice Buddhism from different cultural perspectives, in order to propagate and establish Buddhism as for the well being and benefits of mankind. We also hope that this place could become a spiritual bridge for cultural exchange between China and Canada to build up the international cooperation and construction proposed by the ‘One Belt One Road’ Initiative; the bridge to further promote two-way opening-up and improving communication between the culture of East and West, and the place for two countries to boost world peace. We sincerely expect this platform will soon actively organize some beneficial events and join in the construction of ‘Golden Bonds’ among China, Canada and USA, which can improve the exchange and cooperation in the fields of religion, culture and trade which will benefit the sentient beings in these three countries and contribute to the future and fortune of mankind. We wish, through this platform, the wisdom, kindness, and compassion of Buddha can be integrated into the mainstream of Western culture, then, offer more human spiritual enlightenment and ascension.

The Most Ven. Da Yi, on behalf of the Canadian Buddhist circle, welcomed the Most Ven. Ze Wu and the delegation. He introduced that there are three significant purposes of holding this event: “First of all, this event is for us to witness the ground-breaking of the Śārīra Stupa of Ven. Miao Zhan. Secondly, we have the great opportunity to hear the Most Ven. Ze Wu sharing his valuable experience on Buddhist education. Thirdly, we all will witness the founding of the Canada Branch of BCMAA.” The Most Ven. Da Yi successively said, “This event will be the great initiative of the Buddhist exchange on thoughts and opinions between China and Canada, also will become an important platform for promoting Chinese culture in Canada.”

Ven. Master Hong Lai introduced the origination and significance of the Alumni Association. Soon after, all the participants witnessed the beginning of the unveiling ceremony. The Most Ven. Ze Wu presented the certificate to the Most Ven. Da Yi authorizing him to be the President of the Canada Branch of BCMAA, then announced the association is officially starting operation. After this, the Most Ven. Ze Wu and the Most Ven. Da Yi together hanged out the shingle of the BCMAA Canada Branch and wished this association would be a platform to gather strength to promote Chinese Buddhism and Buddhist culture. In the end, the Most Ven. Da Yi respectfully received the relics of Ven. Miao Zhan brought from the Nanputuo Temple.  

Since 2013, the teachers and students of the BCM, by following the paths made by previous eminent personages and talented persons, played an active role in the construction of “Belt and Road” by applying uniqueness and enthusiasm of Buddhism for contributing to the communication of world cultures and construction of a community of shared destiny for mankind. On May 2017, the delegation of 138 members “Walk again the Maritime Silk Road” from the BCM after visiting a total of 5 nations. This Canada Branch is the 5th branch of BCMAA after those established in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Singapore.
